POTSDAM RAGES BACK FROM 2-0 DEFICIT TO BEAT CANTON 3-2

Potsdam's Taylor Hazen gets the cross-ice feed and one-times the shot past Canton goaltender Dakota Sharp.  Potsdam emerged from the second intermission with two goals in the first 4:30 to thwart the Golden Bears' upset attempt.  Grant Sharlow notched the game winner after Ryan Bercume netted the tying goal just three minutes earlier.  Trent Durocher and Kristian Daley scored Canton's goals.
 

POTSDAM BOYS SURGE BACK TO BEAT ST. LAWRENCE LARRIES 5-1


Potsdam attacker Matt McDonald (19) comes in all alone, but the shot was turned away by St. Lawrence Central goalie Kyle Shampine (1).  After a sluggish first period, the Potsdam Sandstoners bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the second frame and went on to defeat the Larries 5-1.  With the loss on their final game of the regular season, the Larries just missed a chance to tie Salmon River and Norwood-Norfolk for first place in the final season standings.  (Eric Foote photo)

The puck squirts through the legs of Kyle Shampine (1) and lands near the goal line,  but nobody from Potsdam could reach the puck to hit the open net.  St. Lawrence Central's Dylan Patterson  scored the lone goal of the first period.  However, Potsdam's Ryan Bercume slammed two goals, while Tyler Adams, Matt McDonald and Taylor Hazen each netted single markers in response with three goals in the second and two more in the third period.  Evan Drummatter made 16 saves.
 

MAMARONACK DOMINATES MASSENA IN 6-1 VICTORY IN PIZZA HUT TOURNEY


Mamaronack’s Scott Hagan (21) fires a shot short side that was turned away by Massena goalie William Lint (1).  Hagan scored later in the game. COLLINS GOAL LIFTS N-N ICEMEN TO 4-3 WIN OVER ST. LAWRENCE CTL.

St. Lawrence Central's Jack Keenan rides into the slot in front of Norwood-Norfolk's Matt Fiacco (21) and releases the slapper.  Charlie Dullea scored a pair of goals to lead the Larries.  St. Lawrence notched the opening goal when Charlie Dulla knocked home the goal at 5:54 of the first period, but the Icemen got goals from Tom Fiacco and Billy Jackson , the latter with just 15 seconds let in the first period to take a 2-1 lead.  After a scoreless second, the teams exchanged two goals each in the final period, including a goal with 0.8 left in the game by Dullea  Zach Baldwin also scored for St. Lawrence.  Jake Ladouceur also tallied for N-N.
 

DRUMMATER STOPS 17 TO BACKSTOP POTSDAM WIN VS. SALMON RIVER 3-1

Potsdam's attack on the left win draws a double team from Salmon River's Ross Cree (77) and Brad McGowan (4).  Skaron Mayo netted the only goal for Salmon River in the first period, advancing the Shamrocks 1-0.  Potsdam got two markers in the second period from Ryan Merriman and Ryan Bercume.  Peter McAdoo polished it off with an insurance goal in the third.
 

CANTON BLANKS ALEXANDRIA 6-0;
HUBER'S TWO GOALS LEAD BEARS


Alexandria Bay goaltender Aziel Snyder lunges to the left as the puck skips across the surface of the ice and just eludes his custody.  Rick Huber netted a pair of goals as the Canton Golden Bears won just their second league game of the season, but a convincing 6-0 win over the Purple Ghosts and a solid tuneup before the playoffs begin next week.  Kristian Daley and Trent Durocher added a goal and two assists each for the Bears who are 2-6-1 in league, 5-13-2 overall.

THOUSAND ISLANDS TOPS ALEX BAY,
BUT FALL IN BLACK TOURNEY FINAL

Alex Bay goaltender Aziel Snyder snatches the puck from the air.  Alexandria won the consolation game 6-4 over Immaculate Heart.  The Ghosts bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to tie on goals by Slocum, then  Blake Burr from Slocum.  Justin Ward, Riley Thompson and Brian Sanford all netted single goals.  IHC was led by two goals each from Leslie Pound and Matt Morgia.
 

LADOUCEUR SCORES 0:23 OVERTIME: ICEMEN UPSET SALMON RIVER 3-2

February 6: sNorwood-Norfolk's Jake Laadouceur slammed home the game-winning goal just 23 seconds into overtime to deliver the Icemen to a 3-2 upset victory over the first place Salmon River Shamrocks.  Ladouceur scored all three N-N goals.  Shamrocks' Ty Thompson netted a goal and collected an assist.  The Icemen took over sole possession of 2nd place in the division at 8-4-1, 9-8-1 overall.  Salmon dropped to 11-2-1 in the division and 13-8-1 overall.

PARISIAN'S 3RD PERIOD GOALS SEALS VIKINGS 5-1 WIN VS. TUPPER

Thousand Islands' Andrew Kellogg (4) back flips the puck for a close-range shot on Meade.  Drew Parisian fed three assists and Ryan Grimshaw added a goal and two assists for the Vikings.  Jon Hall backstopped the effort with 16 saves.  Tupper's lone goal was scored by Rob Lalonde with an assist from Scott Paiement.
 

HUBER, DUROCHER, O'CONNOR LEAD CANTON IN 7-0 WIN VS. MALONE


Malone goaltender Chris Beebe (10) makes a diving save with the paddle of his stick and makes this initial stop, but the rebound was poked into the net by Canton’s Joe Conklin (18). The Bears jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead in the first period and won 7-0 led by Trent Durocher’s one goal and three assists along with John O’ Connor’s four assists. POTSDAM-MASSENA 2ND MATCHUP: RAIDERS DEAL STONERS FIRST LOSS

POTSDAM JUMPS TO 3-0 LEAD, THEN FIGHT OFF RAIDER COMEBACK 4-2


The Potsdam Sandstoners scored the first three goals, then had to fend off a furious Massena comeback to win 4-2 in the first of two head-to-head matchups within three days.  The Raiders crept within a goal at 3-2 midway through the third period, before Ryan Merriman sealed the win with an open net goal with 4.2 seconds remaining.  Potsdam remains as the only unbeaten team in Section X, while the Raiders fell for the first time in league play.  (Mike Webb photo)  Game Gallery

The Raiders netted a second-period goal that just squeezed inside the goalpost against Potsdam goalkeeper Evan Drummatter.  Potsdam netted the game's first goal on an 18-foot slapshot off the blade of Potsdam's Matt McDonald that just trickled over the glove of Massena goalie Josh Holmes.  The Sandstoners mounted a 3-0 lead in the middle frame when Taylor Hazen needed just 25 seconds to connect on an unassisted goal and Ryan Bercume snared what proved to be the game winner at 3:06 on a short-handed marker.   Nick Pichete put the Raiders on the board three minutes later, then Dan Tyo closed the deficit to 3-2 on a pass from Remy Boprey.  Massena's best chance to tie came on a two-man advantage midway through the third period.  The final opportunity came on a breakaway with 27 seconds left, but the shot flew wide.
 

N-N ICEMEN CLIMB BACK TO 2ND PLACE WITH 11-2 WIN OVER TUPPER

 
Norwood-Norfolk goaltender Mike Belile kicked out the game's first shot on goal from Tupper Lake's Bryan Geiger (6).  The Icemen jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the contest en route to an 11-2 win over the Lumberjacks.  The win bumped the Icemen back into 2nd place in Division II.

Norwood-Norfolk's Jake Ladouceur (17) got the initial shot on Tupper Lake goalie Zach Meade with the rebound loose at the right side of the net.  Ladouceur led the Icemen with two goals and three assists.  Tom Plumb, Mike Carbone and Chuck Wagstaff also chipped in two goals each.  Jeremy Waite scored his first varsity goal in the win.  Matt Fiacco collected a goal and four assists.  Rick Lalonde and Rob Facteau scored Tupper's two goals which drew the Jacks within two goals at 4-2, before the Icemen scored seven unanswered.  Nick Belile snared 14 shots, while Meade stopped 34 shots.
 

 Games of Week 8-9: January 19-31, 2009

 MASSENA BOUNCES BACK VS. DETERMINED CANTON TEAM 3-1

SALMON RIVER AVENGES LONE LEAGUE LOSS BEATING LARRIES 8-4

SARANAC LAKE CAPTURES WADE TOURNAMENT TYING ALEX BAY 3-3


Saranac Lake’s Michael Phelan has the puck knocked away by a diving Purple Ghost, Travis Martin, in front of the net. Saranac Lake stormed back from 3-0 to forge a 3-3 tie and win the Brian Wade Tournament at O.F.A.  Drew Tedford scored twice and Brandon Patraw added a goal and an assist in the comeback.

O.F.A. JUMPS ON I.H.C. 6-1 TO CLAIM SECOND PLACE IN TOURNAMENT

IHC’s Chad Gebo (22) gets rid of the puck while he gets checked into the boards by a Ogdensburg player.  Eric Barr notched three goals and added two assists, while Erik Whitcombe delivered a goal and set up four others while the Blue Devils romped to a 6-1 win, the same score as the loss to Saranac the night before. Matt Morgia got the goal for I.H.C.

 All Tourney Awards went to Immaculate Heart's Matt Morgia and Ogdensburg's Erik Whitcombe, Eric Barr and Chris Harper.
 

IMMACULATE HEART SURGES BACK TO POST 5-3 WIN OVER ALEXANDRIA

Thousand Islands' goalie Tyler Sorrell (1) sticks out the right pad for a critical save to keep his team in the game against Northwood Prep in the Malone Hockey Tournament. Sam Malloy scored for Northwood, while Trevor Parisian logged the lone goal for the Vikings.  Sorrell who had 30 saves in the contest was named to the All Tournament Team.
 

 O.F.A.'S LATE GOAL FORGES 4-4 O.T. TIE AGAINST NORWOOD-NORFOLK

RED STORM CAPITALIZES ON FOUR POWER PLAYS TO BEAT O.F.A. 6-1

Malone's Jared Marshall (18) scored the only Huskies' goalie against Kyle Shampine (far left) in the second period to climb back into the game at 2-1 at the time.    The Larries had five different goal scorers: Jobie McCarthy, Dylan Patterson, Tim Joanette, Kyle Strader and Connor Eldridge.  Shampine stopped 17 of 18 shots for the Larries' victory.

January 12: The St. Lawrence Central Larries broke a 1-1 tie when Zach Baldwin scored on a setup from Brady Helmer at 4:17 of the second period, then fended off a late Vikings comeback to post a 3-2 Division II win against Thousand Islands. Jack Keenan opened the scoring when he lit the lamp at just 42 seconds into the contest. Brett Mahoney got the assist. Mark Fearby tied the game eight minutes later, with Ryan Grimshaw assisting. Carrying a 2-1 lead into the third period, Baldwin delivered a crucial insurance goal for the Larries with just 4:17 left in the game. Dylan Patterson and Connor Eldridge assisted. Nate Kemp’s unassisted goal brought the Vikings back to within a goal just 50 seconds later, but T.I. could not pocket the equalizer. Viking goalie Jon Hall collected 25 saves. Larries’ Kyle Shampine stopped 18 shots.

The Ogdensburg Blue Devils scored a goal across each period and held off Malone 3-1.  Matt Gardner, David Troiano and Eric Whitcombe each hit the mesh with goals for the Blue Devils.  Ryan Brown delivered the only goal for the Huskies in a Division II matchup at Ogdensburg.  O.F.A. goalie Chris Harper had 29 saves, while Malone's Chris Beebe made 32 saves.

Salmon River's Nolan Thomas (9) digs the puck out along the boards in the Thousand Islands zone.  Evan Thompson netted the first goal on assists by Ty Thompson and Kody Bingham at 9:31 of the second period.  Trevor Parisian scored the equalizer just four minutes later to tie the contest from Chris Hunt and David Damon.  In a goaltending showcase, Tyler Sorrell made 11 saves including two glove gems in the first period and Jon Hall made 32 saves the rest of the way for Thousand Islands.  Matt Healy also collected 20 saves including two key kick outs.

January 10: The Tupper Lake Lumberjacks ended a season-long drought with a 2-1 win at Lake Placid.  Pierson St. Pierre delivered the win, set up by Zach Decheine, for the tie-breaker midway through the third period.  Between the pipes, goalie Zach Meade collected 21 saves for the Jacks to earn the win.  Lake Placid's lone goal was scored by Matt Bussey.

BEEKMANTOWN TRUMPS ICEMEN COMEBACK IN 4-3 OVERTIME WIN

THOUSAND ISLANDS TOPS ALEX BAY 4-2 TO WIN HOLIDAY TOURNEY TITLE

SALMON RIVER TURNS BACK PESKY MALONE IN 5-1 VICTORY

Potsdam’s Ryan Bercume splits between two defenders from Canisius before having the puck poked off if his stick.  Bercume scored a goal and dished up an assist to lead the Potsdam offense.  Chris Roll scored the first goal of the game for Potsdam who improved to 4-0 overall.  Potsdam beat Kenmore West 5-1 in the tournament championship on Saturday.
 

SARANAC CENTRAL OUTLASTS AMHERST 3-2 IN CONSOLATION


Saranac Central get a shot through a screen that finds the back of the net for a goal.  Kyle Carpenter tied the game at 6:48 of the first period, Logan Morris scored 39 seconds late and Jake Hooper ripped a power-play goal all in a span of 4:17, then the Chiefs held off Buffalo Amherst 3-2 in the consolation of the Massena Hockey Tournament.  (M. Amherst's David Rubach scored at the 2:43 mark of the first period for the game's first goal.  After Saranac Cnetral netted three straight, Sean Mullane scored at 8:54 of the third to pull Amherst within a goal at 3-2, but they could not deliver the equalizer.  Aaron Tenbuuren made 16 saves for the Chiefs.

LARRIES PULL OUT 3-2 WIN OVER N-N ICEMEN ON HELMER GOAL IN O.T.

St. Lawrence Central’s Jobie McCarthy poke checks the puck away from Norwood-Norfolk’s Jake Ladouceur (17) to prevent a breakaway.  The Icemen opened the scoring when Tom Plumb blasted a rising slapshot from the right point to gain a 1-0 lead at 13:26 the second period.  Charlie Dullea tied the game 1-1 midway through the third, before Helmer put the Larries on top 2-1 on a power play.  The Icemen pulled their goalie with 1:52 to go and scored the tying marker when Jake Ladouceur picked up a bad pass in Larrie territory and buried it.  Dullea set up Helmer for the game winner by patiently waiting for his attacker to step into the slot and one-time the puck past Jordan Bond.  Both goalkeepers had stellar games.  Kyle Shampine made 35 saves, while Bond made 32 saves.
 

POTSDAM POUNDS GUILDERLAND
13-5 IN CORBETT TOURNEY OPENER

For the Sandstoners (2-0), Mike Ellis, Seth Adams, Greg Burkum, Dakota Beaulieu< Jordan LaPointe and Ryan Merriman all netted single markers.  Dan Dickinson had the hot scoring stick with a hat trick for Guilderland.  Potsdam will play Auburn for the tournament title on Saturday.
 

CANTON OPENS WITH 5-1 LOSS TO AUBURN IN POTSDAM TOURNAMENT

ST. LAWRENCE CENTRAL UPSETS SALMON RIVER IN OPENER 3-1

Salmon River defenseman Wishe David (15) faces a rush of Larries entering the Shamrocks' zone.  Hilo Herne scored the lone goal for the Shamrocks, giving them a 1-0 first period lead.  However, Jack Keenan scored to tie the game in the first period, then Brady Helmer netted the final two goals, including one off a rebound in front of the Shamrock net as the Larries went on for a 3-1 win.

MASSENA DISHES ST. LAWRENCE'S FIRST LOSS IN 3-0 SHUTOUT

As a Massena defender dives from behind to try to stop the breakaway by St. Lawrence Central's Kyle Strader (5), Massena goalie Josh Holmes (29) slides to protect the corner of the net.  Taylor Zappia, Nate Pichette and Clay Allen netted goals for the Red Raiders in the win.  The Raiders outshot the Larries 45-9.  Kyle Shampine made 42 saves for the Larries.
