Clarkson’s Chris D’Alvise (11) gets
checked from behind and into the
boards by
Canisius’ Vincent Scarsella (23).
Canicius tied the game 3-3 in the final 14 seconds of the
game, then won in overtime on a Clarkson clearing pass that
appeared to deflect off an official and right to a Canicius
player. The upset prolonged Clarkson's tailspin,
racked with misfortune and injury, for their sixth straight
loss. (Foote photo)

Clarkson’s Jake Morley of Ogdensburg, NY takes a
slapper and his stick snaps in half.
January 3: After a posting big win in the first round of the
Ohio Hockey Classic on Friday night, the Clarkson University
Hockey team could not carry over the momentum into the
tournament championship game as the Golden Knights lost 2-0
to tourney host Ohio State. Clarkson, which broke out of an
11-game winless drought (0-9-2) with the 4-2 victory over
second-ranked Miami in the opening round, suffered its first
shutout of the season in Saturday’s title game before 4,902
fans at Value City Arena in Columbus. The Knights, who own a
3-11-4 overall record, return to the North Country this
coming weekend for a home-and-home series against arch-rival
St. Lawrence. Clarkson plays at St. Lawrence on Saturday and
then hosts the Saints in a Sunday afternoon game at Cheel
Arena, which will be broadcast live nationally on ESPNU.
Freshman goaltender Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT), who
made 40 saves against Miami, was solid in the Knights’
crease again on Saturday with a 32 save-effort. "It was an
outstanding weekend for Paul," stated Clarkson head coach
George Roll. "I know he gave us the chance to with both
nights. That’s a credit to his work ethic. I was impressed
with both teams we played. Miami was probably the best team
we have seen this year. Ohio State had a lot of composure
and battled hard for a young team. We missed the net a lot
and (Dustin) Carlson made some big saves," "We didn’t do a
great job of creating rebounds during the game. Ohio State
was in their building with the crowd and we had the chance
to beat them.” The Green and Gold, who grabbed the lead just
99 seconds into Friday’s game against Miami, came out flat
to start the championship contest as the Buckeyes held a
15-4 shot advantage through the opening 20 minutes. Ohio
State tallied the only goal it would need when Hunter Bishop
knocked in a loose puck in the slot off a rebound at 7:22.
Clarkson picked up its play midway through the second
period, and out shot the Buckeyes 10-5 in the middle frame,
but did not take advantage of its scoring opportunities. The
Knights struggled with the man-advantage, going 0-of-6 on
the power play. Clarkson had a tremendous opportunity to
even the score with a lengthy 5-on-3 power play early in the
third period, but failed to make the most of the two-man
advantage. Ohio State sealed the win with an empty-net goal
by Zac Dalpe with 41 seconds remaining. Sophomore defenseman
Bryan Rufenach (Cameron, ONT) was named to the
All-Tournament team.
January 2: The Clarkson University Hockey team could not
have asked for a better way to start the New Year after
knocking off #2-ranked Miami University 4-2 in the opening
round of the Ohio Hockey Classic at the Value City Arena in
Columbus, OH on Friday evening. Four different Golden
Knights scored goals and freshman goaltender Paul Karpowich
(Thunder Bay, ONT) posted 40 saves as the Green and Gold
broke out of an 11-game winless drought (0-9-2) with their
first victory since November 7. Clarkson, at 3-10-4 overall,
will face off against host Ohio State in Saturday’s
championship game at 8:05 p.m. “I thought our guys competed
hard and Paul Karpowich was outstanding tonight, especially
in the first period,” stated Clarkson head coach George
Roll. “We really battled for loose pucks and did a great job
on the penalty kill. Overall our effort was very good for 60
minutes. After we got that first goal you could see that we
started to get confidence. We got some great plays from guys
who we need to be our go-to guys. I thought Shea (Guthrie)
was an offensive force. He really created a lot of things
for us. I am certainly proud of the way the guys competed
against one of the best teams in the country.” With the
victory, Roll gained his 99th win at Clarkson, while the
Knights denied Miami head coach Enrico Blasi his 200th
career victory. Taking the opening lead of a game for only
the fifth time this season, Clarkson gained the early
momentum when senior assistant captain Shea Guthrie
(Carleton Place, ONT) tallied his second goal of the season.
At 1:39 of the first period, Guthrie finished off a passing
combination from freshmen Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) and
Julien Cayer (Carleton Place, ONT) with a backhand shot from
the bottom of the right circle for his 28th career goal.
Miami (12-4-3) tied the game with Carter Camper’s 4-on-3
power play tally at 8:44 of the second frame, but the
Knights went back on top at 13:05 with their first
power-play goal in their last 16 man-advantage chances.
Cayer positioned at the top of the crease won the puck
during a scramble in front and lifted in his second goal of
the year. Sophomores Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and
Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) assisted. Clarkson, which
is 47-0-4 in its last 51 games with a two-period lead, added
to its margin with a two-goal spurt early in the third.
Sophomore defenseman Bryan Rufenach (Cameron, ONT) connected
for his third goal of the season on a shot from the slot at
1:28. Tremblay and Guthrie assisted. Just 2:18 later,
DeFazio netted a power-play marker with sophomore Scott
Freeman (Whitby, ONT) and Rufenach assisting to give the
Knights a 4-1 advantage. The RedHawks pulled to within two
with Justin Vaive’s power-play marker at 7:57, but Clarkson,
behind the stellar goaltending of Karpowich, was able to
hold off the Miami comeback attempt. The Redhawks held a
42-19 advantage in shots, but Karpowich was solid throughout
the game, posting 15 first-period stops, six in the second
and a season-best 19 more in the third stanza to finish with
his second 40-save outing of the season Playing against the
number-1 ranked penalty-killing unit in the nation, Clarkson
recorded its third multiple-goal effort of the season on the
power-play with a 2-6 outing with the man-advantage. Miami
was 2-of-8 on the power play.

Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich goes into the splits to make
a point-blank save, but it wasn’t enough. Princeton added an
empty netter late to hang on for a 4-2 victory over the
Golden Knights. For Clarkson it marked their
fifth-straight loss, all in E.C.A.C. contests. (Mark

Freshman Nick Tremblay (19) tucks the puck into the back of
the net to score his first collegiate goal and give Clarkson
a 2-0 lead. Fellow freshman Louke Oakley also
connected for his first collegiate goal and sophomore
Brandon DeFazio added an empty-net tally with 3.9 seconds
remaining as the 15th-ranked Golden Knights extended their
regular-season home unbeaten streak against ECAC Hockey foes
to 21 straight games in the Knights' 3-0 win vs. Brown.

St. Lawrence University’s Nick Pitsikoulis (22) looks to get
a point-blank shot on Vermont goalie Rob Madore (29).
S.L.U. defeated Vermont, the 11th-ranked team in the nation,
4-3.
The game winning goal came when the Saints Zach Miskovic
carried the puck from his own zone with 10 seconds remaining
and dumped it on net. The puck fluttered through the
air, skipped on the ice and handcuffed Vermont goalie Rob
Madore. Saints' forward Jared Keller swooped in and
slammed home the rebound with just 0.8 seconds remaining on
the clock for the win. (Eric Foote photo)

Vermont’s Brett Leonard (26) puts a hit on St. Lawrence’s
Matt Generous (7) during a skirmish in front the Saints
bench.
January 3: The University of Vermont jumped out to a 3-0
first period lead and freshman goalie Rob Madore made it
stand up for the 2009 Catamount Cup Championship as the host
Catamounts turned back St. Lawrence 4-0 in the title game.
Vermont got just the kind of start to the game the Saints
did not need, scoring two goals in the first 4:17 of the
game to rev up the capacity crowd of 4003 and putting the
Saints in an early hole. Sophomore wing Jack Downing did
most of the first period damage, scoring his first and
second goals of the season and assisting on the third goal.
“Vermont came out flying and pinned us back on our heels in
the first period,” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “We recovered
and played pretty good hockey in the second and third
periods, but the damage had been done.” Downing’s first
goal, just 1:15 into the game, came as Peter Lenes put a
hard shot on net which Alex Petizian kicked out, but Downing
charged the net and put the rebound back in just before
colliding with the Saint goalie. The Catamounts, who went
four-for-eight on the power play in their 6-4 win over
Colgate on Friday, connected on their first power play
chance of Saturday’s game as Downing took a pass from Viktor
Stalberg and slid a shot along the ice which banked in off
the post at 4:17. Wahsontiio Stacey made it a 3-0 game with
his fifth of the season at 12:50 as the Catamounts took
advantage of a turnover in the Saint defensive end. SLU
tried the clear the puck, but it hit a linesman and bounced
to Downing, who fed Stacey who charged the net, coming right
down the center of the zone. The Saints played a better
second period, but still couldn’t solve Vermont goalie Rob
Madore, who came up with several big saves among his ten in
the period. The Saints had four second period power play
opportunities and Vermont three, but neither team scored as
Kain Tisi had ten saves for the Saints in relief of Petizian.
“Madore made some big saves and we missed a couple of great
chances or had the puck bounce off the post. I think if we
could have gotten one in the second we could have made it a
little more interesting, but UVM played very well with the
lead,” Marsh added. SLU turned in a solid third period as
well, but couldn’t solve Madore, who made 14 of his 29 saves
in the final 20 minutes and received some help from the post
as the Saints came up empty despite generating some good
pressure. Vermont tacked on an empty net goal with 17:41
gone in the period as Corey Carlson tapped the puck out of
the zone and Stahlberg beat a sliding Saint forward to the
puck, sliding it into the net from just inside the defensive
blue line. Tisi finished with 17 saves for the Saints and
did not allow a goal in his stint in net as Vermont finished
with a 33-29 edge in shots on goal. The Saints, now 8-9-1,
were shut out for the third time this season and were
scoreless in seven power play chances. Defenseman Zach
Miskovic and forward Casey Parenteau were named to the all
tournament team for the Saints who will conclude the
non-league portion of the 2008-09 season with a two-game set
against Clarkson next Saturday and Sunday.
January 2: While things got a little too interesting for the
Saints in the final three minutes of Friday’s game between
St. Lawrence University and Ferris State in game one of the
2009 Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont, the game
did end up in a 5-4 Saint victory and a ticket to the
championship game. St. Lawrence dominated the first 50
minutes of the game, building a 5-1 lead in its return to
action after a 19-day layoff, but Ferris State staged a late
rally with three goals in the final 10:49, the last one
coming with 41 seconds left before the Saints were able to
put it away and earn a spot opposite the winner of game two
between host Vermont and Colgate in Saturday’s 7 p.m.
championship game. “I thought our guys played a very solid
game for the most part,” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “We did
a lot of good things and created some excellent
opportunities on offense. Things got a little sloppy toward
the end of the game, but generally we were solid defensively
against a pretty good team. It is a good start to the second
half.” It was the fourth win in the last six games for the
Saints and gives them a 6-3-0 record in non-conference
competition. SLU also climbed back to the .500 mark for the
first time since Nov. 21 and will take a 8-8-1 mark into
Saturday’s title game. The Saints couldn’t have asked for a
better start to the game as they scored the first goal of
the new year just 1:13 into the first period. Zach Miskovic,
who was named one of 20 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior
Class award on New Year’s Eve, drew a tripping penalty on a
Ferris defender, but slid the puck to Travis Vermeulen while
falling down. Vermeulen fed Alex Curran, who put a shot on
goal and Brock McBride, playing his first game since Nov. 29
after a high ankle sprain, collected the rebound and fired
it into the open side of the net for sixth goal of the
season. St. Lawrence increased its lead to 2-0 at 17:04 as
junior defenseman Derek Keller scored his first career goal
as his slap shot from the point deflected past Bulldog
goalie Pat Nagle off the far post. Sean Flanagan and Jared
Keller assisted on Derek Keller’s goal which came in his
72nd career game. The Saints struck early in the second
period to make it a 3-0 game and send Nagle to the showers
as Casey Parenteau went end-to-end on a power play, cut
across the front of the goal mouth and shot back across his
body, hitting the net inside the far post for his fifth of
the season at the 2 minute mark. It went to 4-0 on a
shorthanded goal by Kevin DeVergilio at the 5:46 as
DeVergilio blocked a shot at the blue line and broke into
the Bulldog end, greeting goalie Taylor Nelson with a shot
just under the crossbar from point blank range for
DeVergilio’s third of the season. Ferris did get one goal
back when junior Casey Haines scored his fourth of the year
in a scramble in front of Alex Petizian, who couldn’t quite
get back across the crease to stop the shot at 9:21 to make
it a 4-1 game. The Saints made it a 5-1 game with their
second power play goal of the game at 5:35 as Zach Miskovic
pinched in from the point and took a cross-crease pass from
Parenteau, scoring his sixth of the season before the
Bulldogs worked their way back to make it close at the end.
The Bulldogs cut it to 5-2 on a power play goal by Derek
Graham who was all alone in front when the puck slid off a
Saint block and right onto his stick at 9:11 and made it a
5-3 game when Justin Menke chipped a rebound on a power play
past Petizian at 17:30. Ferris made it a 5-4 game when Matt
Case scored from the point with the goalie pulled for an
extra attacker with 41 seconds left, but the Saints were
able to hang on for the win. Petizian turned in a solid
effort despite surrendering the four goals and finished with
30 saves for the Saints while the two Ferris State goalies
combined for 27 saves.

January 3: The top-ranked Plattsburgh State men's
hockey team ran its season-opening unbeaten streak to 13
games with a 3-0 blanking of visiting Castleton State in the
championship game of the Cardinal Classic at the Stafford
Ice Arena. The Cardinals are 11-0-2 since losing to Saint
Norbert, 2-0, in last year's NCAA Division III championship
game played at famed 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
This marks the third time in the 34-year history of the
program that Plattsburgh has started the first 13 games of a
season undefeated: the 1999-2000 squad went 13-0-0 and the
1991-92 campaign saw 12-0-1. The Spartans fall even to
5-5 on the season. After the teams skated to a scoreless
first period, Dan Sliasis gave the Plattsburgh offense all
it would need with 1 minute and 52 seconds gone in the
second, netting his second goal of the season while the
Cardinals were on the power play. Joey Wilson made it 2-0
about 6 minutes later and Riley Hill added an empty-net
goal, unassisted, with 40 seconds left in the game for
insurance. Plattsburgh sophomore goaltender Bryan Hince, who
was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player, stopped all
19 shots he faced to earn his third shutout this season to
lower his goals-against average to 1.97. In two contests, he
made 38 saves on 39 shots. Seth McNary had 22 saves for
Castleton, which is 1-3 on the road. All-Tournament Team: D,
Ryan Scott, Williams; D, Ward Smith, Plattsburgh; F, Stuart
Stefan, Castleton; F, Riley Hill, Plattsburgh; F, Joey
Wilson, Plattsburgh; G, Bryan Hince (MVP), Plattsburgh.
January 2: Joey Wilson scored
two goals and Phil Farrow had
three assists to power
top-ranked Plattsburgh State to
a 5-1 victory in Friday's second
semifinal game over Wesleyan in
a battle of Cardinals at
Stafford Ice Arena. Plattsburgh
showed no ill effects after a
three-week break for the
holidays by scoring four goals
on special teams--going 3-for-8
on the power play and getting a
short-handed goal while killing
off a penalty--and will face
Castleton State in Saturday's
championship game at 7 p.m. in
the 2009 Cardinal Classic.
Plattsburgh improves to 10-0-2
while Wesleyan falls to 1-6. The
teams skated to a scoreless tie
in the first period, but
Plattsburgh carried the play
with 16 shots on goal while
limiting Wesleyan to six. Late
in the second period, Wilson and
Farrow teamed up to give the
hosts a 1-0 lead with Wesleyan
on the power play. After Riley
Hill made it 2-0 with 1 minute
and 58 seconds left, Brian Dew
cut the deficit in half just
1:39 later. In the final 20
minutes, it was all Plattsburgh.
Wilson scored his second goal of
the night and Andrew Willock
also found the back of the net
just 28 seconds apart midway
through, and Ward Smith rounded
out the scoring with a slap shot
from the blue line. Mike
Palladino kept Wesleyan in the
game in the early going,
finishing with 44 saves. Bryan
Hince had 19 stops for
Plattsburgh, losing his bid for
a third shutout of the season
when Sam Robinson and Todd Keats
assisted on Wesleyan's only goal
of the game.

December 6-7: The North Country Community
College Saints hockey team suffered its two
toughest defeats of the season this weekend,
falling to Mohawk Valley CC 8-1 on Saturday
and 13-3 on Sunday. Both games were played
at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. In the
first game, the Saints and Hawks each were
able to put 36 shots on goal, but it was the
Hawks who connected for three first-period
goals against the Saints’ starting
goaltender, Marc Gillette (Indian Lake, NY).
A rash of penalties in the second period
ended any hope of a Saints’ comeback as
NJCAA leading scorer Kevin McCready added to
his season totals with four goals and an
assist. The lone bright spot for the Saints
was a tally late in the second period.
Winger Matt Lemay (Ottawa, Ontario) finished
off a feed from linemate Josh Bechard
(Champlain, NY) and defenseman Josh Johnson
(Malone, NY) for the Saints’ only goal. The
second game was more of the same as the
Saints struggled on the defensive end after
a tight first period. Again it was McCready
leading the Hawks’ attack, adding another
four goals to his league leading total.
Neither starting goaltender Jeremy
Casselberry (Avery, WI) or Ryan Kenefic
(Houston, TX) were able to stop the barrage
of shots put forth by MVCC. The Saints’
offense tried to counter with the scoring
punch of defenseman Josh Johnson. Johnson, a
team captain, notched the Saints first hat
trick of the season, netting a goal in each
period. In the first, a nifty pass from Lee
Gach (Long Beach, NY) sprung Johnson down
the left wing for a power play goal to tie
the game at 1-1 early. The second found
Johnson scoring on assists from center Chris
LaShomb (Massena, NY) and winger Chris
Hellberg (Holliken, Sweden). With the game
out of reach in the third and his teammates
pulling for Johnson to complete the hat
trick, first-year winger Reshad Jahurali
(Hollis, NY) found Johnson to the left of
the Hawks’ goal for a power play backhander
with just four minutes to go. The Saints are
off for winter break and will return to the
ice on January 15 for a non-conference game
against Northwood School at the Olympic
Center in Lake Placid.

Goalkeeper Chris Hyk (Hamilton, ONT/
Georgetown Raiders) had 21 saves for
the win. Despite the score several
game stats were evenly balanced with
Oswego taking 23 shots to the Bears
21. Potsdam had 40 minutes in

21 saves at goal in the Bears loss.
December 5: Despite a two-goal come
back in the second period, the SUNY
Potsdam men fell 3-2 to the visiting
Cortland Red Dragons in Friday’s

St. Lawrence University’s Karell Emard buries a rebound
that gave the Saints a 2-1 lead
during the second period.
First-year student Alley Bero,
formerly Salmon River, scored
her seventh goal of the season
with only 2:24 to play in
regulation to tie the score at
4-4 against Cornell. The goal capped the
scoring, and help the No. 3
women’s hockey team dodge an
upset bid by the Big Red, who
were led by sophomore Rebecca
Johnston’s hat trick.

December 13: The St. Lawrence
University women’s hockey team
withstood another barrage of shots
from No. 8 Mercyhurst on Saturday,
as the Lakers finished with a 43-11
advantage in shots on goal. However,
it was a pair of power play goals
including a 5-on-3 tally that would
lead Mercyhurst to the weekend sweep
with a 2-1 victory against the
Saints in Erie, PA. Mercyhurst
picked up their ninth consecutive
win, improving to 12-4-0 on the year
while St. Lawrence was swept by the
Lakers for the first time in
University history, falling to
11-4-3 on the season. The Lakers
built a solid 16-2 advantage in
shots on goal in the opening period,
as they consistently peppered St.
Lawrence junior goalie Brittony
Chartier throughout the frame.
Mercyhurst junior Meghan Agosta, who
picked up two goals and an assist in
Friday night’s 5-2 victory, scored
the lone goal of the period on the
power play at 12:56, with an assist
going to Ashley Cockell. The Saints,
who had hoped to build on a solid
third period in Friday night’s game,
faced a critical 5-on-3 penalty kill
in the second period when junior
Courtney Sawchuk was called for
hooking at the same time that the
visitors were whistled for too many
players on the ice. Though the
Lakers had a full two-minute 5-on-3
try, it took only 16 seconds to take
a 2-0 lead when Agosta picked up her
second of the game at 12th of the
season at 7:30 of the second period.
Hayley McMeekin and Valerie
Chouinard were credited with helpers
on the goal. Despite being outshot
15-6 in the period, St. Lawrence
would cut their deficit in half at
15:24 when senior assistant captain
Carson Duggan scored her 14th goal
of the season. Duggan solved
Mercyhurst netminder Hillary
Pattenden to get St. Lawrence on the
board at 2-1 when she completed a
tic-tac-toe play, with assists going
to first-year students Vanessa Emond
and Alley Bero. Special teams would
prove to be the key to victory on
Saturday, as St. Lawrence was simply
unable to capitalize on any of their
power play tries throughout the
game. The visitors finished 0-for-7
with the extra skater, while
Mercyhurst was 2-for-9. The Lakers,
who were able to kill of three
penalties in the final period,
continued to use their dynamic
offensive prowess and speed to keep
the Saints away from Pattenden,
outshooting St. Lawrence 12-3 in the
final 20 minutes to hang for the 2-1
victory. Pattenden finished with 11
saves for Mercyhurst to pick up the
victory, while Chartier kept her
team in the game behind her second
consecutive 41-save effort.
“Obviously we would’ve liked to have
come down here and played better
than we did, but Mercyhurst is a
talented team and was extremely
well-prepared for these games,” said
St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.
“(Meghan) Agosta showed why she is
highly-regarded as one of the best
players in the world this weekend,
but we’ll need to re-group and come
back ready to play hard in 2009.”
The Mercyhurst series completes the
opening half of the 2008-09 season
for St. Lawrence, who will not be in
action again until January 9 and 10
when they welcome nationally-ranked
Boston College to Appleton Arena for
a pair of games. Following the last
non-conference series of the season
against the Eagles, the Saints will
turn their attention back to ECAC
Hockey, where they currently are
tied atop of the conference
standings.
December 12: In a highly anticipated
battle between two nationally-ranked
foes, the hosting Lakers of No. 8
Mercyhurst College used a 46-24
advantage in shots on goal to knock
off No. 4 St. Lawrence University on
Friday night in Erie, PA. Junior
goaltender Brittony Chartier made a
season-high 41 saves including 17 in
the second period, but Mercyhurst’s
Meghan Agosta led the home team to
their eighth straight victory. St.
Lawrence drops to 11-3-3 (6-1-1) on
the season, while Mercyhurst
improves to 11-4-0 (4-0-0). “I
thought Mercyhurst was able to keep
us on our heels throughout the
majority of the game with their
speed,” said St. Lawrence head coach
Chris Wells. “Brittony (Chartier)
turned in a great performance and we
obviously had our chances on the
power play, but in the end, they
took it to us.” The Lakers took a
1-0 lead only 3:27 into the game
when Kelley Steadman beat Chartier,
with assists going to Vicki Bendus
and Bailey Bram. Despite outshooting
the Saints by a wide 15-6 margin
after 20 minutes, though, that would
be the only score in the period for
the home team. Agosta, who is an
annual favorite to win the Patty
Kazmaier Memorial Award which
recognizes the nation’s top women’s
hockey player, showed her talents
midway through the second period by
tallying consecutive special teams
goals only 45 seconds apart. She
made it 2-0 at the 11:00 minute mark
with a power play goal from Valerie
Chouinar and Jesse Scanzano, then
picked up a short-handed tally from
Jess Jones at 11:45 for a 3-0
cushion. Junior defenseman Courtney
Sawchuk would get one back for the
Saints at 13:06, when she scored her
second goal of the season on
Mercyhurst goalie Hillary Pattenden.
Seniors Marianna Locke and Lisa
Batchelor assisted on the goal,
which made it 3-1 after two periods
of hockey. In a game that was
riddled with 18 minor penalties, the
third period proved to be a physical
battle with very little scoring
until the later stages. Trailing by
two, Coach Wells opted to pull
Chartier with nearly four minutes
remaining in the contest to give St.
Lawrence a 6-on-4 power play
opportunity. The decision backfired,
though, when Hayley McMeekin scored
an empty-net goal at 16:52 for a 4-1
Mercyhurst lead. After Bendus while
whistled for a body checking penalty
at 17:32, Wells again pulled
Chartier, this time for a 6-on-3
power play try. St. Lawrence was
able to convert on the chance, as
senior Alison Domenico scored the
extra-attacker goal at 18:25 with
another assist going to Locke.
Despite picking up the late goal,
the Saints needed two more to even
the game, and kept their goalie on
the bench for the extra skater.
Scanzano would end the drama at
19:02 with another empty-net score
from Agosta and Bendus to cap the
game’s scoring at 5-2. “I was
out-coached tonight,” remarked Coach
Wells, “but we were able to find
some success later in the game that
we'll try and carry over to
tomorrow.” Mercyhurst finished with
an 18-shot advantage against the
Saints, who finished 1-of-11 on the
power play while the Lakers closed
at 1-of-6. Chartier’s 41 saves were
not enough to earn her a victory, as
she fell to 11-3-3 on the year while
Pattenden’s 22 stops moved her
record to an impressive 10-1-0.

Ohio State’s Laura McIntosh (11)

Carson Duggan (12) with a stick

captain Marianna Locke picked up her
100th career point, scoring the
game-winning goal against Ohio State
University in a 5-1 win at Appleton
Arena. The Saints (9-2-2, 5-1-0)
knocked off the Buckeyes thanks
largely to a 39-20 advantage in
shots on goal and two late power
play goals. (Eric Foote photo)

December 6: An
apparent game-winning goal in the final
split second of overtime was overturned
after video review leaving the Clarkson
University Women’s Hockey team having to
settle for a 2-2 tie in ECAC Hockey
action against Colgate before 321 fans
at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights looked to have pulled out
the victory over the Raiders when
freshman Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE)
fired in a shot off her own rebound from
along the left boards just before the
horn sounded, but the officials, after a
lengthy five-minute video review, ruled
the goal light came on after time had
expired. Clarkson closes out the 2008
portion of the schedule with an 8-6-4
overall record and a 4-2-2 ECAC Hockey
mark. The Golden Knights return to
action on January 9-10 with a two-game
home series against Hockey East foe
Maine. Junior Genevieve Lavoie (Delson,
QUE) and sophomore Melissa Waldie (Newmarket,
ONT) paced the Clarkson offense with a
goal and one assist apiece. Sophomore
Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) posted
21 saves. Colgate (8-8-2, 2-4-2) out
shot the Green and Gold 23-21, including
a 10-6 margin in the third period, but
the Knights held a 4-1 advantage in the
extra session. The chances on goal were
few and far between for both teams early
on, as the Knights and Raiders combined
for 13 shots. In those 13 shots,
however, came three first-period goals.
At 8:31, two seconds after the Raiders
killed off a power play, Britney Selina
(Thornhill, ONT) took a hard shot from
the point and the puck was redirected by
Lavoie with a waist-high stick
deflection. Waldie also assisted on the
score. The goal was Lavoie’s fourth of
the season. Exactly three minutes later,
Clarkson put another on the scoreboard,
this time capitalizing on a power-play
chance. Senior captain Kimberly McKenney
(Smiths Falls, ONT) sent a pass down
from the blueline to Lavoie near the
bottom of the circle. Lavoie then
quickly sent a pass to Waldie across the
crease, who one-timed a shot in for a
2-0 lead seven seconds into the power
play, her eighth goal of the year.
Colgate responded with a goal late in
the period to cut the Clarkson advantage
to a more manageable one goal margin.
Elin Brown sent a pass to linemate
Marissa Dombovy, who was alone in the
slot, and Dombovy put a tough move on
Dahm to make the score 2-1. The Raiders
scored their second goal of the game, a
power-play marker, early in the second
frame. Trying to dump the puck in,
defenseman Kiira Dosdall had her “shot”
deflect off a Clarkson player, hit a
gouged spot in the ice, and then bounced
by a confused Dahm who tried to hustle
back into the net after the oddly
bounding puck. The power play goal for
the Raiders marked the 18th consecutive
game that they have recorded at least
one man-advantage goal. Clarkson
finished 1-of-6 on the power play, while
Colgate was 1-of-5 with the extra
skater.
December 5: A
short-handed goal early in the third
period by Liz Zorn ended the Clarkson
University Women’s Hockey team’s
six-game unbeaten streak as Cornell
University upended the Golden Knights
3-2 in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel
Arena. The Golden Knights, who also saw
a four-game winning streak end, fell to
8-6-3 overall and 4-2-1 in conference
games, while the Big Red improved to
6-5-1 and evened their league slate at
3-3-1. The victory was Cornell’s second
in the 11-game rivalry against the
Knights, stopping an eight-game slide to
the Green and Gold. The Golden Knights
controlled most of the play for the
first 13 minutes or so, but Cornell
appeared ready to score the first goal
late in the period with a sustained
attack in the Clarkson end. However,
freshman Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE)
stole the puck near the blue line and
made a nifty pass off the boards to
junior Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT),
who then skated in and wristed a shot
from the top of the circle to give the
Knights a 1-0 lead at 13:34. It was
Selina’s third goal of the season, and
Baribeau picked up her ninth assist.
Clarkson was barely done celebrating
when Cornell tied the score up 1-1. Just
12 seconds after the Knights’ goal, the
Big Red tallied off a scrum in front,
with Karlee Overguard scoring her fourth
of the season and the assist going to
Stephanie Holmes. In the second period,
Cornell became the first team to hold a
lead on the Knights in nine periods when
it tallied on the power play at 5:33.
Just 13 seconds after a hooking penalty
was called on Clarkson, freshman
Catherine White tapped in a rebound
after the Knights’ goaltender Lauren
Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) had made the
first stop on a shot from Rebecca
Johnston. The goal was White’s sixth of
the season. Late in the frame, the
Knights became the beneficiary of a
5-on-3 for what would have been nearly a
minute and a half, but Clarkson scored
at the 16:18 mark to tie the game up at
2-2. Senior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke,
QUE) sent a pass out to junior Carlee
Eusepi (Oakville, ONT) at the point, and
Eusepi found freshman Brittany Mulligan
(London, ONT) down near the bottom of
the circle. Mulligan then put the puck
just inside the post to tie up the
score, her second goal of the season.
Gaudet’s assist was her team-high 14th
of the season, and Eusepi’s assist was
her sixth. After a couple of impressive
saves by Cornell’s Jenny Niesluchowski,
Clarkson looked like it was ready to
reclaim the lead on a power-play chance.
A misplayed restart in the Clarkson
defensive zone ended that chance,
though, as Liz Zorn picked up an errant
pass in the slot and flipped a shot in
over Dahm, a short-handed marker at
6:09. The Knights spent the last minute
skating with an extra attacker, but
Clarkson was unable to come up with the
equalizer in the third period.
Niesluchowski made 31 saves, including
several sprawling stops in front, while
Dahm made 19 saves. Clarkson had a 33-22
edge in shots.

Clarkson celebrates after Marie-Jo
Gaudet scored a goal from outside
the blue line that gave the Golden
Knights a 2-0 lead over the Harvard
Crimson. Sophomore Lauren Dahm
made 35 saves, including 16 in the
third period, to help the Clarkson
hold off 4th-ranked Harvard 2-0.

December 6: Amber Ellis
scored what proved to be the game-winning
goal in the first period and Claire O'Connor
added an unassisted power play goal for
insurance in the second as second-ranked
Plattsburgh State shut out No. 10 Neumann,
2-0, on Saturday in Eastern College Athletic
Conference West Division women's hockey
action. The Cardinals are now 7-1-1 overall,
including 6-1 in ECAC-West play. Neumann is
4-4 in the league. Danielle Beattie made 13
saves in the Plattsburgh net, recording her
third shutout this season and 11th overall.
Mel Brunet had 31 stops despite the loss,
which was the Knights' fourth in nine games
overall. Kate Fairfield and Vanessa Worz
added assists on Ellis' goal.
December 5: The No.
10-ranked Neumann Knights held No. 2
Plattsburgh State Cardinals scoreless for
the first two periods of their match-up on
Friday. However, Plattsburgh burst away from
Neumann's defenders in the third to score an
impressive four goals for the win, 4-0.
Plattsburgh rises to 6-1-1 on the year, 5-1
in the Eastern College Athletic Conference
West Division. The Cardinals are currently
in a tie for first place in the ECAC West
with No. 5 Rochester Institute of
Technology. Neumann now stands at 5-3 on the
year, and is third in the ECAC West with a
record of 4-3. Kate Fairfield scored what
would become the game-winning shot at 2:17
in the third period. It was her fifth goal
of the season, and second game-winner of the
season. Stephanie Moberg who netted an
insurance goal for the Cardinals off an
assist from Danielle Blanchard followed
Fairfield at the goal just under two minutes
later. Scoring the third goal of the game
for Plattsburgh was Steph Moon at the 8:14
mark in the third. Brittany Meade assisted
her. Moberg and Blanchard then teamed up
once more, along with Claire O'Connor, to
record the Cardinals' fourth goal of the
night with 1:18 left to go in the game.
During the play, Moberg recorded her
team-leading eighth goal of the season and
Blanchard picked up her seventh assist,
which is also a team-high.

November 16: The No. 2-ranked
Plattsburgh State women's hockey
team capped off its weekend with a
4-1 win Sunday over visiting Chatham
University at the Stafford Ice
Arena. The result follows a 10-0
victory by the Cardinals over the
Cougars on Saturday. Plattsburgh now
stands at 4-1 on the year, as well
as in the Eastern College Athletic
Conference West Division. Chatham
drops to 1-4 overall, 1-3 in the
ECAC West. After the teams skated to
a 0-0 first period, the Cardinals'
Kate Fairfield scored first just 56
seconds into the second period. She
was assisted on the goal by Danielle
Blanchard and Stephanie Moberg. The
Cougars answered back just over 7
minutes later when Ashley Reid slid
the puck past Plattsburgh's Mandy
Mackrell off a pass from Lauren
Fishman. The 1-1 tie was shortlived,
however, and Moberg netted the
eventual game-winner for the
Cardinals at the 12:16 mark during
the second period after receiving
the puck from Helen Giroux. Kristen
Bond and Laurie Bowler added
insurance goals for Plattsburgh
during the third period. Mackrell
racked up 22 saves during her first
start of the season. Brenn Scott
recorded 48 saves for the Cougars,
with 32 of them coming in the first
period. Moberg finished with 11
shots on goal, a career high.
