St. Lawrence's Pavlus Wins Atlantic Region Race!  Saints 4th, Cardinals 6th

St. Lawrence University's Wendy Pavlus (463), flanked by teammate Joanna Luddington (461), comes down a hill with the lead early in the race and that is where she would finish in the as the 2008 NCAA Atlantic Regional Individual Champion. Ludington ran an impressive race to finish a strong second and rookie Jenna Hulton gave the Saints three in the top ten with a seventh place finish on a wet and muddy 6000-meter course on the St. Lawrence campus.

Complete Women's Race Statistics
November 15: Wendy Pavlus, Johannah Ludington and Jenna Hulton can pack their bags for sure for next weekend’s NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship at Hanover College in Indiana. And, while they won’t be sure until the complete field is announced on Sunday, the Saint trio will probably have company when they head to the Midwest. Pavlus was the 2008 NCAA Atlantic Regional Individual Champion, Ludington ran an impressive race to finish a strong second and rookie Hulton gave the Saints three in the top ten with a seventh place finish on a wet and muddy 6000 meter Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course on the St. Lawrence campus Saturday afternoon. The Saints finished third in the 30-team field, one spot out of a guaranteed berth in next weekend’s championship field, but based on the finish of the top three and some impressive results earlier in the season, coach Mike Howard is fairly confident the Saints will be there as a complete team instead of just sending the top ten trio who qualify automatically if the Saints do not make the field as a team. “I think based on today’s performance that the NCAA will recognize that we could run a pretty good race next weekend,” said Howard. “It would have taken all the doubt out of it to finish second, but we are delighted with the way things went today.” Geneseo State captured the team title with 64 points and Cortland State was second with 72 with the Saints third with 125, Ithaca fourth with 149 and The College of New Jersey fifth with 157. Geneseo and Cortland earned the region’s automatic berth and the Saints, Ithaca and TCNJ earned the right to be included in the at-large pool for consideration as team entries. Those determinations will be made Sunday as the teams and individuals for the national championship race are determined. The top seven individuals who are not on one of the qualifying teams will compete as individuals in the NCAA Championship. Pavlus, Ludington, Hulton and Ithaca’s Lindsey Nadolski, Plattsburgh’s Jennifer Schffhouser, Martine McGrath of TCNJ and Kelsey Conn of Brockport are in for sure as the individual qualifiers from the Atlantic Region, but if the Saints make it as a team, three more individuals from other teams will qualify and if more than one team in the at-large field comes from the Atlantic Region, additional individuals will also get to go. The 218-runner field in Saturday’s race spent most of the day chasing Pavlus and Ludington. The Saint duo ran at the front of the pack virtually from the opening gun and established a solid pace despite the mucky conditions. Pavlus, who won in 22:31.3 opened up a margin on Ludington late in the race, but Ludington finished strong in 22:47.1 with Ithaca’s Nadolski third in 22:55.8. Hulton continued her strong rookie season with a seventh place finish in 23:24.8 with first year Jenny Kagan finishing as the Saints fourth scorer in 45th place in 24:49.6 and senior Lindsay Bisaccio completing the Saint top five with a 70th place finish in 25:19.2. Hillary St. john was the sixth Saint finisher in 77th in 25:30 while Cassandra Dimarino completed the Saint top seven with a 111th place finish in 26:23.

November 15: The size of the traveling party is in the hands of the selection committee. Dan Ramsey and Steve Kipligat will be running in St. Lawrence colors at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at Hanover College in Indiana next weekend, but the rest of their teammates will have to wait until Sunday to find out if it is going to be a full-team or just the two individuals. The Saints finished fourth in the 30-team field at the 2008 Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships run on SLU’s 8000 meter Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course on a rainy Saturday, and while the top two teams in the meet are guaranteed qualification for the NCAA Championship race, the next three earn the right to be placed in the pool for consideration as at-large entries in next weekend’s championship. The full field will be announced on Sunday and the team selection process will also impact the individuals qualifying from the Atlantic Region. “We know Dan and Steve are in regardless of what happens team-wise,” said Saint coach John Newman. “I think we have a pretty good shot at getting a team bid based on what we have done so far this season.” Cortland State, ranked first nationally, won the meet with its five scorers all finishing in the top 20, including three in the top six in a 200 runner field. The Red Dragons totaled 47 points to edge NYU, ranked seventh nationally, which finished with 84 points. Geneseo was third with 91, the Saints fourth with 142 and Plattsburgh fifth with 173. The strength of the regional field and a top-20 ranking for the Saints could help both Geneseo and SLU earn at large team berths. Hamilton’s Peter Kosgei, who finished second in last year’s NCAA championship, was the individual champion on Saturday, running the soggy and sometimes slippery course in 25:18.8, a 14 second advantage over NYU senior Jesse Schneider. Ramsey led the Saints with a seventh place finish in 25:47.9, holding off Plattsburgh’s Michael Heymann in the stretch run. Kipligat was 11th overall and the top freshman in the race with a time of 25:47.9. Jacob Malcomb was the third Saint finisher in 36th overall in 26:49 while Geoff Millard was 41st in 27:02 and Terrence Fox completed the Saint top five with a 47th place finish in 27:07. Jeremy Beaudette was the sixth Saint finisher, 53rd in 27;16 while Mark Burnham completed the Saint top seven with a 85th place finish in 27:51.
